There is a special kind of Pork BBQ sandwich that is disappearing, but Half Circle nailed it. Best I've had in a while. Cash only, but that too adds to the nostalgia. We'll be back.

Half Circle is an absolute must-stop when we visit Wilkes-Barre. My grandparents loved it, aunts, uncles, & parents grew up with it, and I grew up with it. A great place to sit, enjoy good food, & reflect on an earlier time! I always ask for extra relish on the side with their pork 'barbecue'.

My mother went to this place when she was in high school - it was the hangout. Like Arnold's in Happy Days. I've been to it a few dozen times along with her - it IS a transport back in time. It's not a typical bbq place, no. But we've picked up pounds of the pork bbq and relish to bring with us to my Aunt and Uncle's in Lewisberry - they remember this place well. The waitress with the beehive hairdo, the yummy chocolate shakes, the sweet relish, the booths, the music...I give it the five stars because of the overall experience and history. If those walls could talk!

The best part about Half Circle Barbecue is that it's stuck in a perpetual time-loop. The waitstaff may be cryogenically frozen each night, and taken out of time-preserving canisters each morning as to keep up the appearance of the other-worldly reality that is Half-Circle Barbecue. The Bee-hive haircuts of some of the waitstaff make you wonder if they may actually be aliens, hiding large domed heads. It makes you wonder if said aliens were sent here to feed the people of the Wyoming Valley good old fashioned Barbeque. The orange drink may also be pulled from a time-portal linked to a 1950's drive-in diner. The food is adequate and at most times the juke-box is whispering Bob Seger's greatest hits. Something that I've never been opposed too. I remember one summer I worked construction, and the old man who did all the tiling was furious that someone had broken into his car and stole his Bob Seager's greatest hits. The money in the dash, his cell phone charger and other things taken from him were of minor frustrations, but how dare a thief in the night rob him of: "Like a Rock", or "Against the Wind," or god love him the fantastic cover of Van Morrison's "I've Been Workin'" found on Live Bullit. Half Circle Barbeque is a lot like a Bob Seager song. It speaks volumes to those who toil in the Valley. Who work dead-end jobs, and have a certain reverence for anything pre-Agnes. The old booths, and racks of chewing gum at the check-out are a sure sign that you're in the right place, even if it be a place controlled by aliens who cry out for a time when things were easier. Also it's nice to hear the waitstaff make fun of whatever employee is not there on the day your dining. I go for the Turkey BBQ, with relish - because I'm a person, and people are allowed choices. The Pork is also acceptable - and if your a vegetarian, you can either starve or get an order of Potato Pancakes. Always get the Orange Drink, always be part of the experience, someone else's experience, Stuck in Time. NOTE: I can see, at one time, everyone sitting in Half Circle Barbeque, filled with paranoia as the aliens landed ala the 1950's science fiction masterpiece: The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Been eating from this place since I was a kid and it's made the same exact way the pork is usually a little dry but the ham BBQ is quite juicy as well as the beef BBQ it's always been in the same place too. I remember going here after church when I was a kid

You have to understand what this place IS before judging it as a BBQ place. That's not a fair assessment, since it really isn't the typical "BBQ" fare in any way, shape or form. It's another animal entirely. Try to reel your mind further back to a nostalgic place, say...Woolworth counter, 1950's, middle America....and you'll be able to appreciate this place for what it is. It's cool. It's well-known. It's been around since 1937. Prices probably haven't changed that much since then, either. Ok, now that you are in the right frame of mind, you can feel transported back in time by the simple food.....moist, -but bland-, flakes of pork, beef or chicken (I had the pork....it's not QUITE pulled pork, not sure what to call it, really----flakes? shavings?) piled on a Wonder Bread-like bun with a delicious homemade traditional Pennsylvania sweet relish (not sure what the previous reviewer meant by jelly-like? I didn't find it so). The "platter" gets you some not overly-special finely shredded homemade coleslaw or applesauce on the side, and fries. I actually wish I'd skipped the stack of pitiful anemic fries and tried one of the other interesting-sounding sides instead. I really enjoyed the banter with our down home waitress, the atmosphere and old-school patrons of this joint. A real slice of Americana. Three stars for the food; an extra star for the nostalgia. Cash only, but you shouldn't have a problem scraping together your meter-and-toll money to pay if you forgot to bring some.
